Product Engineering Technician

Brief Description: 

FEMA Corporation is seeking a driven and detail-oriented Product Engineering Technician to join the Product Engineering team. An ideal candidate is self-motivated, technically minded, curious, uses a detail-oriented approach to problem solving, and can work quickly to recognize product quality issues. As a Product Engineering Technician, you will work closely with Product Engineering and utilize your technical and detail-oriented problem-solving abilities to determine root causes of production and product development concerns. You will also work closely with Product Engineering and Supplier Quality to ensure quality concerns are resolved through robust corrective actions through both product and supplier development. This dynamic and collaborative position requires curiosity, adaptability, and cross-functional teamwork to achieve operational excellence.

This position reports to the Product Engineering Manager at FEMA Corporation’s Portage, MI facility.

Normal work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Key Areas of Responsibility: 

Line Support Technician – 70% of Time

  • Act as the first line of defense for production quality issues by fielding support calls and troubleshooting product concerns.
  • Proactively monitor production quality to ensure adherence to organizational quality standards and objectives.
  • Make real-time quality decisions and provide guidance to production teams as needed.
  • Analyze production data to identify trends and detect anomalies in valve performance.
  • Quickly recognize and address non-standard valve performance to minimize disruptions.
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting of product faults by leveraging existing engineering documentation to pinpoint root causes of production quality issues.
  • Create Inspection Work Requests (IWRs) to facilitate necessary component measurements for troubleshooting.
  • Effectively communicate ongoing quality concerns to Quality and Product/Manufacturing Engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve production quality challenges efficiently.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production line quality and efficiency.

Engineering Assistant – 30% of Time

  • Ensure compliance with quality systems by maintaining accurate documentation and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of new product rollouts.
  • Maintain and update corrective action logs and problem history records for continuous improvement.
  • Provide hands-on support to Engineering teams during the development of new production lines or process enhancements.
  • Organize, facilitate, and execute prototype and functional builds for upcoming product changes.
  • Create Laboratory Work Requests (LWRs) to facilitate necessary testing for continuous improvement initiatives or new product development.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned to support operational excellence.

Education Requirements:

  • An Associate’s degree in a technical field is preferred, but a strong willingness to pursue one is required.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience at FEMA Corporation or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment (other relevant experience may be considered).

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong ability to analyze and interpret data using MS Excel and other analytical tools.

Communication & Organizational Skills:

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to engage and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Consistently demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism in all interactions.
