Manufacturing Engineer

Brief Description: 

FEMA Corporation is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to develop and improve our manufacturing processes. This position will serve as FEMA Corporation’s subject matter expert on one or more areas of manufacturing processes. This role is expected to solve problems, recommend actions based on data and sound engineering judgement, develop and train manufacturing personnel on process documentation, manage manufacturing projects, and continuously exceed the expectations of the Manufacturing Engineering Group’s customers (both internal and external).

This position will involve 2% domestic travel to external vendors and industry conferences as necessary. The Manufacturing Engineer position reports to the Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor at FEMA Corporation’s Portage, MI facility. Normal work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Key Areas of Responsibilities: 

APQP Project Management Functions: 35% of time

  • Identify the impact of proposed changes or projects on internal and external customers, including determining when customer notification may be required
  • Own the responsibility of APQP project completion upon the timeline required by the Manufacturing Engineering Group’s customers, including Manufacturing Operations, Product Engineering, Applications Engineering, Compliance, and external customers
  • Plan and direct APQP activities, including timeline, budget, and cross-functional team activities with Manufacturing Operations, Production Control, Controls Engineering, Design Engineering, Prototype Machine Shop, Maintenance Technicians, and Quality Department
  • Update management and other stakeholders on project status on a periodic basis. Highlight risks encountered during the project. Recommend ways to remove or mitigate these risks, and any associated costs in time or resources
  • Execute APQP activities and generate APQP outputs with the help of a cross-functional team, including process documentation, SOPs, PFMEAs, control plans, and qualification plans

Engineering Development Functions: 35% of time

  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes by using technical expertise, industry best practices, external vendors, and internal resources such as the Engineering Lab, Controls Engineering, Design Engineering, Prototype Machine Shop, Maintenance Technicians, and Quality Department
  • Communicate engineering change requests to internal resources by providing detailed technical specifications that enable them to complete the requested work
  • Possess technical expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Assembly processes, including servo presses, resistance welding, nutrunner and torque driver operations, and integration with industrial automation
    • Hydraulic test processes, including HPU design, hydraulic test stand design, pump sizing, and hydraulic circuit troubleshooting
    • Industrial processes, including floor plans, time studies, TAKT time, flow charts, and ergonomic studies

Continuous Improvement Functions: 20% of time

  • Identify CI opportunities by monitoring line performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as safety, ergonomics, scrap rate, cycle time, downtime, and OEE
  • Evaluate the scope and impact of proposed CI activities in terms of time, cost, resources needed, risks to safety or quality, or customer notification requirements
  • Prioritize amongst multiple CI activities, focusing on those that will have the greatest impact on the business
  • Utilize structured problem-solving techniques and cross-functional teams to determine root cause and implement permanent corrective actions
  • Analyze data from various sources, including using statistical techniques, and use the conclusions to guide decision-making
  • Execute CI activities with the help of a cross-functional team of subject matter experts, including Controls Engineering, Design Engineering, Prototype Machine Shop, Maintenance Technicians, and Quality Department
  • Communicate effectively with manufacturing personnel to keep them updated on the prioritization and status of CI activities and enable their manufacturing operations

Technician Support Functions: 10% of time

  • Provide direct support to the Maintenance Technician group during line-down situations
  • Write PMs, troubleshooting guides, calibration procedures, and training plans to enable technician operations

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field is required

Experience Requirements: 

  • Two to four years’ work experience in a manufacturing engineering role is required
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 Quality Management System is preferred

Required Skills: 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Statistical analysis including GR&R and capability studies
  • Structured problem-solving methods such as 8D and 5-Why
  • Technical writing and communication of reports, change requests, and process documentation

Preferred Skills: 

  • Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement (CI)
  • Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) product development process
  • Technical knowledge in one or more subject matter areas of hydraulic power, automated and manual assembly methods, resistance welding, or solenoid coil winding
  • Possess a basic understanding of electrical circuits and troubleshooting
  • Possess a basic understanding of industrial automation and controls, including understanding Allen-Bradley PLC ladder logic
